India launches probe into palm oil imports from Malaysia

New Delhi: India has launched an investigation to find out whether a spurt in the import of a certain type of palm oil from Malaysia was causing any serious injury to local producers.

According to the Directorate General of Trade Remedies under the Commerce Ministry, it has prima facie found enough evidence to prove a spurt in imports of ‘Refined Bleached Deodorised Palmolein and Refined Bleached Deodorised Palm Oil’ and subsequently adverse impact on local producers.

The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India has filed the complaint with the DGTR on behalf of domestic producers.

“It is considered appropriate to initiate (the probe) in order to determine whether the imports of the product under consideration from Malaysia constitute increased imports and whether the increased imports have caused or are threatening to cause serious injury to the domestic producers,” says a DGTR notification.

The DGTR would recommend a safeguard duty on the import of the palm oil if the probe finds material injury to local producers.
