New Delhi: The government is considering placing curbs on the import of tyres to promote domestic manufacturing, according to reports.
At present, there is no restriction on imports of tyres. The DGFT thinking to put the product under the restricted category which would make taking licence mandatory for inbound shipments.
In the third week of March, the directorate general of foreign trade sought views of the department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT) on the matter as domestic tyre manufacturers have long been demanding to put restrictions on the imports.
Industry has time and again raised concerns over increasing imports of tyres from countries like China.
However, sources added that given the disruption in the global supply chain due to the outbreak of Covid -19, it is very unlikely that the industry department would agree on the proposal.
