New Delhi: Gold imports surged by 35.5 per cent to USD 11.45 billion in April-June 2019 compared to USD 8.45 billion in the year-ago period, the commerce ministry data showed.
The rise in gold imports also jacked up the trade deficit to USD 45.96 billion in April-June 2019 from USD 44.94 billion in the year-ago period.
India is the biggest importer of the precious metal. It imports 800-900 tonnes of gold every year.
